About the Position

CIVIC is seeking highly qualified applicants for our fall and spring internship programs to work directly with our United Nations Program team. This is a unique opportunity to help build CIVIC’s advocacy and policy engagement with the UN. Our interns and fellows have participated in high-level New York meetings and often have the opportunity to design and advocate for their own projects within CIVICs scope of work. They have gone on to full time employment in organizations such as the International Committee of the Red Cross, Department of Defense, Department of State, Open Society Foundation, and the World Bank.

Key Functions

  • Assisting in planning, supporting, and executing advocacy and policy strategies, including the roll-out of CIVIC products for key stakeholders in the New York market, as well as in Geneva;
  • Attending, covering and reporting on events, meetings, and other activities, including at the Security Council and General Assembly, and monitoring developments on CIVIC’s core issues and programs in Geneva;
  • Monitoring and reporting on conflicts, countries of interest and thematic issues, including developments at the UN, particularly the Security Council, General Assembly, Human Rights Council and Peacebuilding Commission, as well as other organs and bodies;
  • Conducting in-depth desk research for the purpose of preparing briefing papers, background documents, speeches, talking points, and other organizational advocacy and policy material;
  • Maintaining and expanding CIVIC’s contact network with key stakeholders in the New York and Geneva market;
  • Copy-editing and reviewing organizational documents including supporter communications, press releases, blog posts, op-eds, letters of inquiry;
  • Providing logistical and administrative support the UN Team and CIVIC’s NY office;
  • Functioning as a self-sustaining member of our team.

Requirements & Preferred Qualifications

  • These internships are open to current graduate level students, those who have recently completed graduate studies, or those with an undergraduate degree and relevant work experience.
  • Applicants should be flexible and have confidence in handling multiple tasks, as well as the ability to work independently.
  • Applicants are expected to have excellent writing and research skills and should anticipate using these skills frequently.
  • Interns will be expected to maintain a level of confidentiality and discretion when working with sensitive information.
  • Fluency in French is welcome.

Additional Details

These are full-time internships.


Fall intern candidates should be available beginning around Tuesday, September 5th through mid-December. Spring intern candidates should be available beginning around Monday, January 10th through mid-May.


Interns receive a small daily stipend to cover transportation to CIVIC's offices.
